Naked Clay
Investigations in Alternative Firing Methods

Allyson currently provides workshops in Naked Raku, Saggar firing and Black-fire
(a technique which resembles native Pueblo Black- ware firing).  All workshops
include slide, lecture, demonstration and hands-on segments.  Two and three day
formats are currently available; however, longer engagements can be arranged
based on the needs of the individual facility.  Workshops are also available at
Stoney Creek Pottery and are limited to 8 participants.

• Clays suitable for alternative firing
• Forming techniques
• Texturing techniques
• Terra sigillata: recipes, process, application, coloration
• Burnishing: leather hard, oil burnish, terra sigillata
• Masking techniques
• Slip and Glaze: recipes, process, application, troubleshooting
• Saggar: appropriate clays, alternative saggar materials, forming techniques,
materials for fuming, loading a saggar
• Firing
• Reduction techniques
• Cleaning and Finishing
• List of local suppliers for all materials used during the workshop
• Technical information package sent to registered participants prior to
workshop to aid in the preparation of works.
• Workshop manual which provides an easy way to access all workshop
information for future reference.
